Youth Commission minutes

6/12/05

Present: Rachel Haseley, Jay Phillippi, Terra Cutlip, Willow Cutlip, Lily Lane, Liam Doherty, Rachel Phillippi, James Moffitt, Sammi Cutlip, Fr. Dan Weir, Carol Wiest, Butch Wiest, Wendy Schumacher, Lois Carter, Pete Avery

In preparation for Senior High conference Jay asked for names of Seniors so they can be recognized. Commission members supplied a long list of potential names. Any additions were to be e-mailed to Jay.

EYE – It will be three dioceses traveling together, Puerto Rico has made other travel arrangements that make more sense. Delegation is asked to bring 2 cases of water plus 2 cases of “other beverages” plus a snack to share on the bus. The pick up location will be St. David's West Seneca at 2 AM.

Clergy involvement – We need to get more of the diocesan clergy involved. Our current group of clergy are outstanding but nearing retirement age, also problem of when they have conflicts. Need to ask more clergy to be involved, especially good if the young people ask.

Elections - Rachel Phillippi nominated for youth chair, Liam Doherty for Diocesan Council rep. Butch moved that nominations be closed, Wendy seconded. There were no other interested candidates so Terra moved that the motion be recorded as a unanimous consent vote Butch seconded that and the motion was passed. Rachel will need to submit a letter of resignation to the Bishop and Jay will notify Bishop Michael of our recommendation for the council (since that's an episcopal appointment)

Convention delegates - The following names were put forward to be asked to serve:

Niagara – Jess Wahler or Geoff Seefeldt

Central Erie – Lily Lane

Eastern Erie – Maria Matthews

Northern Erie – Liam Doherty

Southern Erie – Kelly Szczepanski

Cattaraugus - ?

Chautauqua – Rachel Phillippi

Genesee – Tom Avery

Question raised if we should do t-shirts again this year? Terra moves that YC cover costs of dinner, lunch and t-shirts and expenses for delegates . Liam seconded. Discussion limited number of t-shirts to 30. Motion passed.

Calendar - Need to look at dates for upcoming year

Bishop's Ball set for Feb 25.

Junior High mid year event – February

Senior High mid year event – January

Happening dates – teamings and weekend -

September 17 March 4, 18

October 2, 21-26 April 7-8, 27-30

November 3-6

Need to make sure we don't schedule other events against these dates.

Next June will be a difficult time for Jay as he prepares for Senior High AND is at General Convention. He could use an assistant to deal with last minute paper work and the like.

Possibility of doing a Nightwatch program at the cathedral in October. Jay is looking into it.

Camps

Senior high is at 27 or 28 applications but is good to go. Staffing is short right now but there's enough for a minimum. Need to make Youth Commission presentation to the conference.
